Top 25 fittest and fattest cities in the U.S

A new survey and report on fittest and fattest cities is out and it hurts when we think about our lifestyles.

We know that as a country we face a huge dilemma with overweight and obesity (I won't get started on this 'cause I can't take no more). However we usually think a common place for movie starts, rock starts and celebrities would have to be one of the fittest cities in our country, right?... wrong!!!

You may be surprised to find Men's Fitness magazine ranks Miami as the nation's fattest city in its annual survey. The fittest? It was Salt Lake City.

How on earth did this happen? I mean I live between Bradenton and Palmetto and just a trip to Walmart makes me sad and even enraged to see people just eat, eat, eat and do nothing for their health. Even when it's Free at times.

This is the story; even though Miami has a high number of health-food stores per capita, Men's Fitness found it also has nearly three times the fast-food restaurants as the average city. And while there are 79 percent more gyms and health clubs than average, residents are less likely to regularly use their memberships. Not many residents take advantage of outdoor activities, either.

On the other hand... Salt Lake City got top marks for being the fittest city because of its abundance of park space, athletically motivated residents, and below- average obesity rates. It ranks highest in the survey in the number of people who take part in activities like beach volleyball, racquetball, aerobics, hiking, basketball, yoga, tai chi, swimming, cycling, running, and kickboxing.

At least Tampa, made it to the top 23 in the list for the fittest cities in the US.

More on the report go to http://www.mensfitness.com/lifestyle

The message is clear get out, be active, join a health club and take advantage of outdoor activities.

FITNESS AT ANY AGE: Older People Who Diet Without Exercising Lose Valuable Muscle Mass

Participating in exercise activity at any age does wonders for your body. However increasing your level of activity after the age of 50 is even more important to do so. Here’s why: a recent study published at Science Daily website, showed a group of sedentary and overweight older people placed on a four-month exercise program not only became more fit, but burned off more fat, compared to older sedentary people who were placed on a diet but did not exercise.

The new study also showed that when older people diet without exercising, they lose more lean muscle compared to those who exercise, said senior researcher Bret H. Goodpaster. When they combined weight loss with exercise, it nearly completely prevented the loss of lean muscle mass. The results are important because older people tend to lose muscle mass as they age and too much muscle loss may interfere with activities of daily living.

The 64 participants were 60-75 years of age and were either overweight or obese. All of the participants were sedentary at the outset of the study. The researchers divided the participants into three groups:
• exercise only
• diet only
• exercise plus diet

Those who exercised could either walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bicycle, although most chose to walk. The dieters reduced their caloric intake to achieve a 10% weight loss by the end of the four-month study period. The final group combined both the daily exercise and the diet.

Exercise increases efficiency, burns more fat.

“The take-home message is that, even among older people and during a fairly short period of time, exercise produces metabolic changes that require the expenditure of fewer calories during physical activity,” Goodpaster said. Exercise also allowed older people to more preferentially burn fat, which may be healthier metabolically.”
